Who ist afraid of the ‘New Europe’
Nationalism and European Integration since 1989

Abstract
EU enthusiasts are in danger of contributing to the decline of the European Union. The causes are distorted views about Europe’s past and unrealistic expectations about its future. Integration can no longer be derived from the historical experiences of the founding states, nor are we dealing with a “post-national constellation” in which constitutional patriotism can endow the meaning of integration. The EU of 27 states is more heterogeneous than the European Economic Community of six. But this is not a burden that has to be overcome. Differences and conflicts represent a chance and are the core of what is political. The repoliticisation of the EU is now on the agenda.
