The Chokehold of Populism
Hungary’s Economy

Sándor Richter

Deutsche Fassung

In the 1990s, Hungary was considered a role model for the socialist transformation of centrally planned economies in Eastern Europe. This has changed fundamentally. Today, economic growth in Hungary is lower, public and private debt considerably higher than in other East Central European states. The country was led into this plight by those politicians who irresponsibly concealed the real situation, delayed reforms, and promised the moon.
