Abstract
When, in 2007, an expedition placed a Russian flag on the seabed of the geographic North Pole, international uproar ensued. The conflict over continental shelves seemed to escalate. Some observers painted a picture of crises and war over the Arctic’s raw materials. If one analyses the facts, one comes to another conclusion. The escalation of a conflict over the Arctic is unlikely.
