Borderline
Poland’s Eastern Border, Schengen, and the Consequences

Abstract

The intensity of Polish border trade with Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine depends on the general economic situation, bilateral relations, and respective domestic politics. An analysis of border traffic from 1994 to 2009 shows that Poland’s participation in the Schengen visa regime and high fees have led to a structural decline in border traffic. The result is ambiguous: activity in the border areas is dying out.
