Abstract
The world-class violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter recalls her anguish before the premiere of “Chain 2”. She had to struggle with the unfamiliar hieroglyphics in Witold Lutosławski’s score, but to this day, the wonderful tonal patterns and the colour of his music fascinate her. Thanks to Lutosławski, Mutter gained access to the language of New Music and new freedoms of interpretation. She has little regard for schematic division into currents, eras or national schools and calls for a music that comes from silence: “We need it urgently, because there is a considerable amount of noise going on!”
