Abstract

International energy relations stand in the charged field where business and politics intersect. The business interests of corporations and the power projection of states are closely intertwined. Thus, energy security cannot be understood singly as a geo-political issue or exclusively as a function of open markets. This also applies to natural gas supplies from Russia to Europe. A closer look shows: fundamental changes in Europe’s gas market and Russia’s gas sector have brought gas relations that once worked well together out of kilter. Gazprom has gained bargaining power, but its future is uncertain.
