Abstract

The Russian Orthodox Church hardly deals with sexuality and gender issues. Instead, it just refers to tradition. In its “Social Doctrine” from 2000, the church condemns homosexuality as a perversion. In the meantime, the state has also adopted this position. For the state, this has even less to do with religion and morality than for the church. Homophobia is rather a part of the regime’s anti-Western propaganda. It also weakens those circles within the church who are betting on a modernisation of theology.
