Abstract

In Hungary, ethno-nationalist ideas are very popular. The right-wing conservative government under Viktor Orbán has installed in key offices or covered with state honours writers, historians, and journalists who have repeatedly attracted attention due to anti-Semitic and anti-Roma remarks. Orbán in particular distances himself only to fend off further damage to Hungary’s reputation abroad. Among the ranks of Orban’s party Fidesz, the prevailing view is that that this can contain the further rise of the right-wing radical party Jobbik. Meanwhile, a “culture of hatred” continues to spread.
