Abstract

In 2015, Poland’s national conservative party Law and Justice (PiS) won the biggest victory in its history. It holds the presidency with Andrzej Duda, responsibility for government lies solely in its hands, and it has at its disposal an absolute majority of seats in the Sejm. With that, it now controls all of the levers of power. PiS owed their victory to a rebellion of the young generation, the resentment of the socially disadvantaged, and the widespread hatred felt in rural areas for the political and economic elites in the cities. The myth of 1989 has faded.
