Abstract

In Russia, Oriental Studies (vostokovedenie) has traditionally been a strong discipline with considerable proximity to operational policy making. In recent years, the field has been further developed. Academics at university and non-university academic institutions, such as the Institute of Asian and African Countries, provide foreign-policy makers with information. Middle East and Turkic experts are trained at the elite Moscow State Institute of International Relations. Strategy institutes that are close to the Kremlin, such as the Russian Institute for Strategic Research, orchestrate foreign policy for the Russian public.
