Russia’s conservative counter-movement

Abstract

The term “populism” fails to adequately describe the contours of the new illiberal conservatism. Russia is of particular importance for this movement against (neo-)liberalism. Long before President Putin’s swing towards conservatism in 2011-2013, a conservative intellectual field was formed that gained in influence in several bursts. This essay outlines this process and analyses how development and tradition are connected as key conservative concepts in Russia, and why the new Russian conservatives, despite their declared loyalty to Putin, continue to have a strained relationship with those in power.
