Abstract

György Konrád was one of the outstanding intellectuals from eastern-central Europe. As a dissident, he shaped the profile of the opposition to communist rule. As an essayist and publicist, he dedicated his work to the study of the more recent history of eastern-central Europe, examined the areas of continuity and transformation of authoritarian rule, considered the fate of the Jews in the 20th century and “Auschwitz” as a break with civilisation, and looked to the future of Hungary and the European Union with hopes, concerns and fears. In the emphatic sense of the word, he was a real citizen of Europe.
