Polish polarisation
National conservatives win the general elections

Abstract
In October 2019, the PiS, the Law and Justice Party led by Jarosław Kaczyński, won the parliamentary elections in Poland. In its second term, the PiS government is vigorously pursuing its programme of higher social spending, the curtailment of the independence of the judiciary, the centralisation of the state and the promotion of a nationalist social and cultural policy. However, it will have to reckon with a higher degree of resistance now that the opposition has won a slight majority in the Senate. Poland faces more heated disputes over domestic policy.
