The West’s Sanctions against Belarus
Deutsche Fassung
Abstract
For more than two decades, relations between the EU and the United States and Belarus have oscillated between escalation and détente: election fraud and human rights violations on the part of the Lukašėnka regime resulted in sanctions, which were eased again after concessions were made. This cycle was broken in August 2020. After the falsification of the presidential election and an unprecedented wave of repression and terror against the Belarusian population, the EU imposed sanctions on the regime in Minsk. These sanctions are an appropriate reaction to Lukašenka’s struggle against his own citizens and his confrontational course in foreign policy.
