“We Need to Get People to Read”
Publishing during the War

Abstract
The director of Vivat Publishing in Kharkiv praises the change in awareness among Ukrainian readers that followed Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. As Ukrainians turned their back on Russia, there was an upturn on the Ukraini-an book market. Yet making books under wartime conditions has become complicated. There is a lack of paper and printing capacity. Only a minority of the population reads and buys books. Where demand exists, it can hardly be satisfied. Thus, there is a lack of competent Ukrainian non-fiction authors.
