Abstract
Russia is making steady territorial gains in Ukraine. However, the occupying army is struggling to break the Ukrainian defences on some fronts. Its losses are high, and the equipment used by the “assault troops” is getting worse. Superiors are treating their own soldiers with growing brutality. Ukraine has outpaced the enemy in drone development, and Kyiv also has the upper hand in the Black Sea. In negotiations to end the war, US President Trump has gone a long way towards accommodating Russia. Kyiv has acceded to many US demands, while Moscow is sticking to its maximum positions. The prospects for a ceasefire agreement are poor.
