Abstract
MEP Luděk Niedermeyer and economist Jens Südekum analyse the scale and causes of the economic crisis currently affecting Europe. Many factors are at play: the energy price shock, technological advances, and the return of protectionism in times of geopolitical upheaval are just a few. The sector in which the Czech Republic and Germany are most closely intertwined – the automotive sector – is particularly hard hit. Across national and party lines, they agree: the EU must keep its market open; diversification is the best protection against dependence on individual major powers. The erosion of industrial capital stock can be avoided. The crisis is serious, but it can be managed both politically and economically.
