Abstract
Mona Neubaur, Deputy Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Tomáš Ehler, Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic, analyse the German-Czech differences in energy policy. Whilst Neubaur sees the phasing out of nuclear energy and coal-fired power generation, alongside the massive expansion of renewable energies, as the ideal path to a climate-neutral, resilient and efficient energy supply, Ehler believes this path leads to a dead end. The German energy transition, he argues, is damaging to the economy and competitiveness. The Czech Republic, by contrast, is focusing on the expan-sion of nuclear energy, which he claims also contributes to decarbonisation and thus to climate protection.
