Abstract

On 8 September 1941, the Wehrmacht closed the ring around Leningrad. At least 750,000 of the city’s inhabitants starved to death. Anna Reid has dedicated her study to this war crime. She shows that responsibility for the genocide lies with the Nazi leadership and the Wehrmacht. However, bad decisions, incompetence, disorganisation, and disdain for human life on the part of the Soviet leaders intensified the extent of the catastrophe so that it became a dual tragedy.
