Abstract

Researchers debate whether Jewish history in early modern Poland-Lithuania should be considered as something legally and socially autonomous for the most part or as part of broader social and political developments. Micro-historical analysis of the privileges bestowed within the city of Rzeszów shows that the continued existence of the urban community depended on constant communication between Jews and Catholics. The ruler of the city acted as intermediary and used privileges as a medium of politics.
