Abstract

For a long time, European Studies and transformation research on Eastern Europe were separate disciplines. This is anachronistic. Political and socio-economic developments east and west are closely intertwined. Even during the transition process, politics, economics, and society in East Central Europe and Eastern Europe were largely determined by the European Union. Supposedly specific East European phe-nomena have become all-European. This is shown by the quality of democracy, the transnationalisation of European companies, and the return to intergovernmental decision-making at the EU level.
