Abstract

In June 2021, Lithuania registered an increasing number of people entering the country from Belarus over its lightly guarded frontier border. A few weeks later, this happened again on the Polish-Belarusian border. There, too, people from Syria, Iraq, or Afghanistan tried to reach the EU by slipping through the forests. Poland has sealed off the border with a large police and military force and wants to build an insurmountable barrier. Lithuania and Latvia are also opting for sealing themselves off to the east – and the European Union is supporting them. A discussion about asylum law, humanity, and the scale of the crisis.
